MORE THAN JUST A PAINTING

“I call this art form I have developed ‘Three Dimensional Paintings’ and they are far more than just a painting.

“The process begins, as with all art, with a communication. I decide what I want to communicate to the viewer and envision the art. From this point, I take it beyond the traditional process.

“My first step is to create the 3D aspect of the work. This is something I have developed over the past seventeen years and this alone is extremely time intensive. Once I have the finished, white object, I build a wooden box and cover it with cotton or linen canvas. I then attach the object. Only at this point am I ready to begin the painting.

“The whole approach with a 3D surface is far more challenging than painting on a traditional canvas. I am dealing with a variety of surfaces and angles and I am intent on making the object disappear into the image I am creating.

“I would say that it takes about three times longer to paint a 3D painting than it does for me to simply do an oil on canvas. It is a far greater challenge and when it works, the rewards are far greater. I thoroughly enjoy the illusion I am able to create with this new art form and the effect it has on people.”
